Katrina cleanup
January 3rd, 2006For Christmas 2006, Ann and I went to Camp Coastal Care to volunteer for a week. Here are just a few of the dozens of images.
I would write much more on the impact of this experience but I will only share these images and a few poems I wrote while in Mississippi.

Christmas Boy
I saw a boy at Christmas
eyes bright, grinning, eager
“thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!”
he cried over and over
“It’s too much!”
He was
52 with a beer gut and
losing hair
we removed trees
from his yard.
It’s too much.

On the plane my seatmate
learned where I was going and
with pleading eyes offered me
her peanuts.
Sometimes, that’s all you have to give
Against this landscape, this wasted place,
my five days are peanuts.
