Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal has some of my favorite comics, if only ’cause the creator seems unafraid to be particularly offensive. This is one of those times.
xkcd is fiendishly clever, skipping merrily from cynical relationship humor to grade-school, giggly frolics, from paranoid social theory to complex physics humor I’m simply not intelligent enough to understand. This guy make being-in-love strips that are puppy-dog soft and gooey, and he’s not afraid of a good ol’ rant using the word ‘fuck.’ What a crazy, wonderful range.
Plus, it uses one of my favorite forms of illustrations: stick people.
This strip is priceless: Hallucinations
I love the speed dating gimmicks in Alien Loves Predator, and this latest one is just a classic.

“…and you said we had nothing in common.”
I dunno…perhaps “softer” isn’t quite the right word for these comics. Some of them are sick and dark, some are thoughtful and sorta sweet. Oh yeah, and then there’s just weird, weird, weird.
Now this one…this one is special. It’s not funny - it’s painful. Yet, I find it oddly beautiful. I think of how much I love the laughter of my own siblings and it makes my insides hurt to read this. Odd to include it, perhaps, in a section devoted to comics, but at the same time, this is the power of comics - images and words intertwined to create an intense emotional experience. They want him - the old him - back.
I read this strip from time to time…sometimes the humor is rather dry. I want mayhem and sacrelige. Nevertheless, I visit the site once every two months and get caught up. I thought a few of these were cute in a sorta dark way. Well, hmmmm… maybe “cute” isn’t the right word.
I wrote this comic a few years ago and submitted it to a website that was accepting submissions. I don’t know the guy who illustrated what I wrote - the website owner matched up a script to an available artist. I couldn’t be more tickled.
In September I heard from the publisher, Tim Fish, and apparently this comic is going to be published, included in an anthology used to raise money for an AIDS organization. So it should be available in printed form, but I haven’t heard anything about how to buy a copy.
Yup, that makes my day pretty complete.
