Go West: Day 1: Out of Gas
Got up after about 5 hours of sleep. Cleaned house for an hour and a half, until 9:15 a.m. Breakfast with Stephen. Bought and programmed a new laptop computer. Finished cleaning house: Stephen vaccumed and I did the bathroom while files transferred from old to new computer. Prepared notes for both next-door neighbors. Prepared notes for a couple friends I wanted to visit before heading out of town. Last minute packing. More last minute packing. Shit – what did I forget? Wrote up housekeeping notes to Stephen and instructions for my realtor. A few last minute tasks and things to be packed. Delivered the goodbye notes – stayed for two short visits.
Headed out of town by 6pm.
The car sputtered out of gas on Iowa’s 280 around 11:15 p.m.
I was 100 yards from the exit which would have taken me to Ann’s house. I could see the mocking neon of a Conoco gas station just a little out of walking distance. (I realize it’s juvenile, but I just couldn’t bring myself to get gas at the Iowa chain ‘Kum & Go’). Because of the extra heavily-packed car (damn, I should not have packed 39 shirts), I mis-calculated how long I could drive with the little gas light staring at me. Just another mile…just another mile…
While Ann was cheerfully filling up a gas can (and really, she was extraordinarily cheerful at 11:30 at night) I rested (first time on Sunday) and contemplated the obvious warrior question: How is this like your life?
