I have a bed

Tonight, as I prepare for bed, I’m mindful a host of things - riches that I have that many people in the world do not.

I have a warm bed.
It’s in a warm house.
There is food in the fridge for tomorrow.
And the next day.
And the next day.
And the next day.
I have warm, flannel shirts, thick gloves, earmuffs.
I have luxuries that most of the world won’t have tonight: milk before bed if I feel so inclined, comic books, a television, books. Lots of books.
I’m not going to be secretly abducted by my government in my sleep.
I’m not going to be killed by a stray bomb because my neighborhood is in a dangerous place.
I’m going to work tomorrow. People like me there (generally) and I’m not asked to do anything unethical. No one is going to berate me, use me, treat me like crap. Fire me on a political whim. This is a stable job.

Tomorrow, I won’t be standing at the top of an exit ramp with a sign that says ‘Homeless Totally Desperate
